Experienced carver Hindes introduces a great collection of whittling projects in his first book. He focuses on little carvings of animals and people. The style is rustic and slightly chunky. Each project is well organized with clear patterns. Some of the step-by-step illustrations are a little too small or murky, but most show technique nicely. An appendix covers safety and tool use, cuts, sharpening, and finishes. This book compares well to Steve Tomashek's Tiny Whittling, another good source for small figure carving. VERDICT Recommended as an excellent introduction to figure carving for beginners or intermediate carvers looking for variety.
