This award-winning beginner's guide to the natural world of fish from the creators of the About... series was named an "NSTA Recommends" book.
Noted educator and author Cathryn Sill uses simple, easy-to-understand language to teach children the basic characteristics of what fish are, how they swim, breathe, and reproduce, and explains the different ways they protect themselves from predators.
With beautifully detailed, realistic paintings, noted wildlife illustrator John Sill introduces readers to the diversity of the fish population, from an Arctic char to a porcupine fish. An afterword provides more details, inspiring further learning. This book is ideal for early childhood and elementary units in science, environment, and marine life.

PreS-Gr 4-Sill introduces the concepts of camouflage and defense mechanisms within the context of the fish world in a simple and concise manner. The husband and wife team collaborate for another successful entry in their early science "About..." series. As in the other titles in the series, the realistic full-bleed illustrations will mesmerize readers, while the text provides easy-to-follow information. However, an unfortunate sentence placement gives the impression that fish and their environs should be protected solely for the commercial, recreational, and food value that benefits humanity. The Spanish translation of the original English text is easily accessible. An appendix is included. The bibliography and web links are English-only resources. VERDICT The author and illustrator provide engaging information about the multifaceted ecosystem of fish. A serviceable addition to any STEAM curriculum.-Mary Margaret Mercado, Pima County Public Library, Tucson, AZ
