The mighty Soviets were the favorites to win hockey gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics. But a team of U.S. college players had other ideas. The stunning upset of the Soviet hockey team by the young Americans has been called the greatest moment in international hockey. And to many people the victory was about much more than sports. Americans had gone through difficult times at home and abroad. Beating the best hockey team in the world—and its major Cold War rival—gave Americans a sense of pride. One iconic photo captured the impact of that "miraculous" historic event.

Gr 7 Up-Capstone expands the "Captured" series into sports, with its usual combination of information about an iconic photograph and the photographer and circumstances in which it was taken. Each title emphasizes how the topic pivotal sports moment symbolized a major change in sports and the world at large, i.e., Jackie Robinson and racial integration. Books include plenty of background about the interplay between sports and society. The many illustrations and large photos are a fascinating visual record of events before and after the captured moment. This series is certain to entice sports fans to read about history. VERDICT This is a worthy addition to get students thinking critically about the impact and reach of primary source materials like photographs.

These books tell exciting sports stories through the lens of photojournalism. The historical backdrops to the featured soccer (1999 Women's World Cup) and hockey (1980 Olympics) heroics and the aftermaths are explored, and biographical information is included on the teams' major players and on the photojournalists, whose photos complement the well-written texts. The books' spacious design is inviting. Reading list, timeline. Bib., glos., ind.
