One Plucky Female Pharmacist + One High-Society Naval Officer = Romance—and Danger

For plucky Lillian Avery, America's entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. The challenges of her new job energize her. But society boy Ensign Archer Vandenberg's attentions only annoy—even if he is her brother's best friend.
During the darkest days of the war, Arch's destroyer hunts German U-boats in vain as the submarines sink dozens of merchant ships along the East Coast. Still shaken by battles at sea, Arch notices his men also struggle with their nerves—and with drowsiness. Could there be a link to the large prescriptions for sedatives Lillian has filled? The two work together to answer that question, but can Arch ever earn Lillian's trust and affection?
Sarah Sundin brings World War II to life, offering readers an intense experience they won't soon forget.

Sundin's second Waves of Freedom novel (after Wings of the Nightingale), a delicious mix of mystery, romance, and girl power set at the beginning of WWII, will surely please fans. Lillian Avery faces particular challenges as an amputee with pharmacist ambitions. Her plucky drive and supportive family have helped her through a lot, but when she begins a romantic liaison with a wealthy naval officer, Lillian's life becomes more complicated than she could have imagined. Lillian's voice is strong and her battle is uplifting, but the nature of the crime she encounters and a few turns in her up-and-down relationship might strain credulity. Nevertheless, the drama of a U.S. on the brink of war experienced by a this independent young woman and the man she lovesâwho wrestles with what readers will recognize as PTSDâwill keep readers interested despite moments of predictability. Lillian's adventures, her dashing man, their growing faith in God, and an exciting historical context will satisfy readers looking for an uplifting story in the midst of falling hope. Having lost her leg in a childhood accident, Lillian Avery, fresh out of pharmacy school, is determined to make her own way in the world without pity from people or God. When a string of suspicious prescriptions surfaces, Lillian joins forces with handsome naval-officer Arch Vandenberg, who, after a terrifying U-boat attack, suspects his shell-shocked crew members are connected to the requests for habit-forming sedatives. Working together to expose a dangerous drug ring, Arch and Lillian risk their hearts as much as their safety for the answers they seek. Following the celebrated Through Waters Deep (2015), Sundin returns to the Boston Navy Yard in the latest installment in her Waves of Freedom series. With riveting doses of intrigue and inspiration, this delightfully unexpected plot is driven by action and balanced by iconic 1940s elements. Readers will be swept up by the novel's chilling dramatic irony, heartwarming charm, and rich naval history as Sundin tells a compelling story of rising above appearances and finding one's true anchor in faith.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
