This atypical paranormal romance is rich in the details of parapsychology but slow in building suspense. Psychotherapist Cathryn “Cate” Duncan has been in a depressive state since her mother’s death. Finally, her boss sends her to the mysterious MacGregor Group, where Cate is informed that she’s an emotional empath and immediately admitted to their strict, unconventional treatment program. While Cate knows that her conventional, science-based mental health techniques aren’t keeping her suicidal thoughts at bay, she is skeptical of working with a bunch of gung ho alternative healers who are excited by her special gifts. She also doesn’t appreciate the assertive attitude of manager Ben MacGregor. However, there’s a lot to be said about being able to “mind-meld” with her clients, and soon she’s bonding with quirky, endearing healers who use aura readings, crystals, and psychic abilities. Events take an unsettling twist when a client turns violent and Cate has to decide just where she belongs. While romance readers may need more than the subtle connection between Cate and Ben, those with an interest in parapsychology will be fascinated by this artfully written series starter. Agent: Andrea Hurst, Andrea Hurst and Associates.
