Freshman year is stressful enough without accidentally being married to the King of England. Of course, Wren Wheeler can't tell her Northwestern classmates about that; after surviving a narrowly-averted apocalypse over the summer, everyone's had enough excitement for one lifetime. Wren knows she needs to move on from Theo, but she can't forget the look in his eyes when he left her on that island in Greece—and also, he took her dog.
When an ill-fated attempt to rescue Comet the Apocalypse Dog turns into a chemistry-fueled reunion with Theo that's caught by the paparazzi, Wren finds herself under the royal spotlight. Suddenly, she's a problem for "the firm" to solve, and in order to be protected from the rabid press, she'll have to fly back to London with Theo. Along for the ride are Naomi and Brooke, as well as Theo's siblings, including Henry, the brother he's spent his life being compared to. But because the universe can't let these two maybe-newlyweds have one conversation in peace, their plane goes down over the Atlantic, crashing on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere.
Stranded with no sign of rescue, the group will have to band together against poisonous animals, catastrophic injuries, a brotherly rivalry, and an ill-timed volcano if they're going to make it out alive. And, scariest of all, Wren and Theo will have to face their feelings for one another and decide what they want their futures to look like—and if that future will be heartbreak, or happily ever after.

      Grades 9-12 In The Prince and the Apocalypse (2023), McDowell paired 18-year-old Wren, an American student traveling on her own, with Theo, England's most eligible bachelor prince, for a rollicking summer road trip that could have ended apocalyptically with a comet colliding with Earth. Now Wren and Theo, along with an assortment of siblings, friends, and royal-household staffers, are stranded on an island near Portugal after a plane crash. Unable to communicate with the outside world, they must find water and food while tending each other's injuries and figuring out how to escape before the island's volcano erupts. The many readers who enjoyed the interplay between Theo (reluctant heir to his mother's throne) and Wren (an incoming student at Northwestern) will savor every moment of their latest adventures. The setting gives rise to new adventures, while the enlarged cast of characters brings unexpected tensions, complex relationships, and enjoyable conversations among the smart, witty characters. Fans of British royalty, adventure, and romance will enjoy this gratifying conclusion to McDowell's entertaining duology . . . or is this to be a series? Stay tuned.

      In this sequel to 2023's The Prince and the Apocalypse, an 18-year-old American girl tries to return to normal life following the threat of a global apocalypse--and the heartache of a lost first love. Wren Wheeler isn't sure if she's legally married to the soon-to-be king of England. Was their sudden marriage of necessity on a Greek island during what was supposed to be everyone's last week on Earth really binding? After she returns to Chicago following Comet Week, Wren receives a marriage certificate bearing Crown Prince Theo's signature and legal name, not the fake name she'd assumed he'd use. Desperate to know the truth--and reunite with the dog she left behind when she walked away from Theo in an act of altruism--Wren, along with best friend Naomi and older sister Brooke, travels to see Theodore Geoffrey Edward George. But, as with their last adventure, nothing goes right for the couple. Plagued by the paparazzi, controlled by the Firm, and concerned about protecting each other, Wren and Theo face numerous obstacles, not least of which are his family and a plane crash into the ocean near a deserted island. This action-packed, fast-paced story can stand alone, but having familiarity with the earlier book will help readers connect more deeply with the characters. The supporting characters' witty dialogue balances the leads' somewhat repetitively conveyed fears. Most characters are cued white. A romantic story with serious elements that will have readers wringing their hands and holding their breath. (Romance. 13-18)
