How do we know the New Testament is reliable?

It matters—but discussions on whether the New Testament is historically accurate can be tedious and overwhelming. We want to be confident that the reports in the New Testament are true and dependable, but scholarly discussions around the authenticity of the events recounted in Scripture can be challenging to navigate.

Dr. Ben Shaw provides the clear introduction we've needed for understanding the New Testament's historical reliability. In his book, Trustworthy, he systematically surveys key issues related to New Testament reliability and provides guidance for those setting out to explore the evidence. Concise, to-the-point chapters equip readers to answer the challenging questions one encounters when discussing the credibility of the New Testament. Addressing a wide variety of evidence including archaeology, authorship, text criticism, and non-Christian sources, Shaw leads readers through the key scholarly topics related to New Testament reliability.

Here's the truth: we can trust the New Testament not only for its historical accuracy but also as a guide to life.

How does one determine whether an ancient text is trustworthy? In this brief and easy-to read-guide, Core Apologetics president Shaw (theology, Liberty Univ.; 7 Reasons To (Re)Consider Christianity) does a great job of demonstrating 13 approaches to answering this question. Each angle is covered in its own chapter. Based on scholarship and research, these methods offer New Testament readers strong evidence of the authenticity of the texts and useful arguments for why they might be trustworthy documents about the life of Jesus and the Christian faith. Written for believers, this book probably won't change any minds, but it will give support for believers involved with apologetics. Skeptics may find themselves troubled by how often complicated ideas are glossed over with a string of quotations or assertions, not analyses, and some might conclude that Shaw's statements feel insincere at times. But readers may still gain a better understanding of the New Testament. VERDICT This title presents simple explanations of how to examine an ancient text for authenticity and veracity. A valuable work for not only religion collections but also seminaries.--Herman Sutter
