Gr 4-8-These books provide simple explanations with examples of the basic mathematical concepts identified in each title. Chapters are subdivided into sections with bold headings; a one-inch gray band with text devoted to a mathematical definition, explanation, or suggestion appears on the bottom of each page. Examples and problems set off in rectangular boxes resembling spiral notebooks provide visual interest. The authors do a good job of explaining each topic and of giving detailed, grade-appropriate examples. Each volume includes twenty-eight mini-lessons that provide clear examples, definitions of math terms, and, occasionally, game ideas and real-world applications. No practice problems are provided, making the books most appropriate for those in need of a quick review. The bland, textbook-like layout may be a turnoff to readers. Bib., ind.
