Darkly sexy, emotional and forbidden, a woman unwittingly falls in love with the son of her abductor. The beginning of a two-book contemporary romance series by New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy.Katie Watts was almost thirteen when she was kidnapped at an amusement park. Held captive for days, she's finally rescued by her captor's teenage son, Will, who's been subjected to his father's mental and physical abuse for years. In the aftermath, Katie was sent into seclusion with her family, and Will was shipped off to one foster home after another, completely disappearing from her life.Fast forward to present day and Katherine is ready to tell her story on prime-time news. She believes talking about it will help purge all the self-hatred and devastation once and for all. But she is wrong. Will watches Katie's interview on TV and is inexplicably drawn to her. Her vulnerability, the quiver in her voice as she tells her story—a story he shares with her that no one else understands—makes him ache to protect her once again. He starts to follow her. Watch over her. Ensure she's safe. Banish all the horrible memories that still linger within. Because now that he's found her again, there's no way in hell he's going to lose her a second time.

Murphy’s uneven contemporary romance relies on the overused device of alternating points of view. The perspective swings dizzily among Katherine Watts (both at age 12, when she is kidnapped, and at age 21, when she recalls her ordeal); Ethan Williams, a man who’s obsessed with 21-year-old Katherine; and 15-year-old Will Monroe, who rescued 12-year-old Katie from certain death at the hands of her abductor. The technique might have worked better if all the voices were speaking from their own present times. Instead, the characters’ younger selves are merely recollections of the past by Katherine and Ethan/Will, who changed his name to protect himself from a miserable family history. That aside, the premise and the follow-through do make for an intriguing concept: Ethan manipulates vulnerable, clueless Katherine into falling in love with him by exploiting their inescapable childhood bond. Murphy imbues these characters with genuineness and plausibility, and even readers who don’t love the structure of this story will look forward to the promised sequel. Agent: Kimberly A. Whalen, Trident Media Group.
