Tony has saved $300, enough to buy a small sailboat. He will use it every day during his three-week stay with his grandmother on the Connecticut shore. Once Tony learns to sail, he starts exploring the waters around a group of tiny islands offshore. One day, he sees two people in diving gear on a motorboat. But instead of greeting him, they wave him away. The next time he sees them, he discovers that they will do anything to hide what they have found. He is chased, and his boat is stolen. Now, lost and alone, with night falling fast, Tony wonders if he will ever get back to his grandmother's—and safety—again. Avi is the author of dozens of books for children, including the Newbery Honor Book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. In Windcatcher, he crafts a story crackling with excitement and danger. It is sure to capture the attention of even the most reluctant reader, especially with Audie Award-winner George Guidall's narration.

Tony finds the perfect way to spend his savings--he buys a sailboat that launches him into a summer vacation full of adventure and mystery. This well-crafted story is graced by George Guidall's deft portrayal of character through dialogue. His depiction of the warm relationship shared by Tony and his Portuguese grandmother is particularly charming, and together the two form an odd but effective sleuthing team. Guidall builds suspense without provoking anxiety, so the story is suited to younger listeners (although adults will also enjoy its mystery and insights on sailing). Like the ship model at the center of the story, Avi's tale is a perfectly crafted and believable miniature, and Guidall brings it ably to life. J.C.G. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
