Dog lovers who appreciated the first book about the search-and-rescue dog extraordinaire (cf2]Herocf1]) will be happy to read this action-packed sequel. Though Hero is supposed to be retired, the recklessness of owner Ben and friends ensures that the pooch will be out in the thick of a hurricane saving everyone in sight. The plot is as predictable as the prospect of continuing titles.

Twelve-year-old Ben and his retired police dog, Hero, find a stray puppy; when Scout goes missing, Ben and Hero stumble upon danger. The implausibility of seventh-grade boys breaking up a dog-fighting ring with Hero's nearly-supernatural search-and-rescue help will not deter dog lovers from enjoying this story. However, considering the thin characterization and predictable plot, discerning librarians should give this a pass.
