The secretive and underworld element of gangs creates many questions about them and gang culture. What is a gang and what are today's prevalent kinds? What problems exist currently? What are real gang activities? What is being done about gangs and urban violence? This book answers these questions and many more. Outlaw motorcycle gangs, prison gangs, and street gangs are examined and readers learn that most street gangs are loosely organized with no hierarchy. Females make up nearly a sixth of the total gang membership, and the average age of a gang member is seventeen or eighteen years old. This authoritative book concludes with a discussion of the strategies of prevention, intervention, and suppression of gangs.

Gr 7 Up-These books cover a range of topics that are probably more of interest to teachers than to the target audience of teenagers who read at a fifth- or sixth-grade level. They are informative and reasonably attractive and say all the things that adults want kids to hear. Gangs provides solid background material about a topic that will interest some teens. Social Networking takes a conversational tone and includes advice on how to be safe online. Plagiarism contains some compelling and newsworthy examples of the practice among well-known writers and musicians. The driest title is Financial Literacy, which discusses stocks, bonds, credit cards, taxes, and insurance. Full-color photos appear throughout. None of the titles will fly off the shelves, but they could prove useful where hi/lo titles are needed.-Marcia Kochel, The Galloway School, Atlanta, GA
