Having solved the matter of the Radiant Boy, Riley, Buttercup, and Bodhi are enjoying a well-deserved vacation. When Riley comes across a vicious black dog, against Bodhi's advice, she decides to cross him over. While following the dog, she runs into a young ghost named Rebecca. Despite Rebecca's sweet appearance, Riley soon learns she's not at all what she seems. As the daughter of a former plantation owner, she is furious about being murdered during a slave revolt in 1733. Mired in her own anger, Rebecca is lashing out by keeping the ghosts who died along with her trapped in their worst memories. Can Riley help Rebecca forgive and forget without losing herself to her own nightmarish memories?

Gr 5-8-In this sequel (Square Fish, 2011) of sorts to Evermore (2009) and Blue Moon (2009, both St. Martin's Griffin), Alyson Noel writes about Riley, Ever's dead sister, and her adventures in the Here and Now. Killed in a car accident at the age of 12, Ever, her parents, and her dog also find themselves in the afterlife which appears similar to the living world. Riley discovers her talent as a Soul Catcher, someone who helps reluctant spirits pass over to Here. A reluctant pupil, she is being trained by Bodhi. Their first assignment is to attempt what many others have failed and get Radiant Boy to cross. Riley is stubborn, smart, dedicated, and caring. Kathleen McInerney's pacing and inflection are perfect, and she imbues Riley with the right amount of sass, personality, and petulance.-B. Allison Gray, Santa Barbara Public Library System, CA
