Popsugar on As the Shadow Rises

Following the destruction of the City of Mercy, an ancient god has been resurrected and sealed inside Beru's body. Both are at the mercy of the Prophet Pallas, who wields the god's powers to subjugate the Six Prophetic Cities. But every day, the god grows stronger, threatening to break free and sow untold destruction.
Meanwhile, far away from Pallas Athos, Anton learns to harness his full powers as a Prophet. Armed with the truth about how the original Prophets killed the god, Anton leads Jude, Hassan, and Ephyra on a desperate quest to the edge of the world. With time running out, the group's tenuous alliance is beset by mounting danger, tumultuous romance, and most of all by a secret that Anton is hiding: a way to destroy the god at the price of an unbearable sacrifice. But the cost of keeping that secret might be their lives—and the lives of everyone in the Six Prophetic Cities.
The Age of Darkness trilogy is perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.

Gr 9 Up-All the prophets are onstage and a god resurrected-only for that god to be trapped in Beru's body with the Prophet Pallas holding her sister Ephyra to ensure Beru's cooperation. Jude and Hassan are working to save them, while Anton tries to discover a way to save the world other than the sacrifice he and his friends refuse to make. After two excellent installments, expectations were high for this finale-and the cataclysmic conclusion to Pool's "Age of Darkness" trilogy pays off in spades. With a cast this large, it's hard to imagine everyone getting their share of important choices, but Pool finishes each character arc flawlessly. VERDICT This series has staying power; hand it to readers looking for something similar to Kendare Blake's "Three Dark Crowns."

The conclusion to the Age of Darkness trilogy sees its protagonists facing their biggest challenge yet. After Beru's body is used to trap a fallen god, the Prophet Pallas uses her imprisoned sister, Ephyra, to ensure Beru's cooperation and control over the god. Far away, Hassan plans a rescue mission to save Beru and defeat the god before he can break free and vanquish them. Jude stands by him, desperately hoping that Anton--the Last Prophet and the boy he has fallen in love with--is still alive. Meanwhile, Anton searches for a way to prevent the destruction of the world that doesn't involve a sacrifice he and his friends are not willing to make. This little group, alongside their friends and allies, is all that stands in the way of complete devastation. This uplifting, character-driven volume takes the trilogy to new heights of adventure, tension, and conflict--then effectively wraps it all up with a satisfying bang. The protagonists, alongside their closest friends and romantic partners, are given fitting conclusions for their overarching storylines. Each plays an important role in saving the world from darkness while learning the meanings of choice, agency, and accountability within this story set in a diverse world that celebrates and affirms all kinds of love. A successful ending to a brilliant trilogy about human hope and connection. (Fantasy. 14-adult)
