In this charming contemporary YA novel, neighborhood rideshare driver Charlie Owens embarks on a collision course with love when she crashes into the school's cute but annoying party boy and wrecks his car and her no-strings-attached attitude toward life.

As a driver for her local ride share app, Charlie Owens loves what the open road gives her: freedom, extra cash for an epic road trip, and a path to getting out of her sleepy town of Chester Falls, Massachusetts. She's seen her fair share of mysterious passengers and explosive break-ups in the backseat of her car, but Charlie lives a no-strings-attached lifestyle and never gets involved.

But when a routine post-party pick-up ends with Charlie crashing into Andre, her school's notorious party boy, she's forced to make a deal to drive him anywhere he needs to go, anytime, until his car can be repaired. Suddenly Charlie and Andre are stuck together, and they couldn't be more different. But Andre's charm wins over Charlie's passengers, and she soon finds herself at risk of breaking her most sacred rule: don't fall in love.

Charlie Owens' part-time gig for a local ride-share app puts her on the path to self-discovery and an unlikely relationship. The Backseat app is a convenient way for Charlie to make money. She regularly picks up riders while maintaining her top-notch driver rating. However, her record doesn't stop her from hitting senior Andre Minasian's parked car, which turns into her striking a deal: While his car is being repaired, she'll drive him wherever and whenever he wants in exchange for his not reporting her to Backseat. Their many rides together give Charlie an opportunity to see something more in popular, sporty party boy Andre. Keating includes a side plot that involves a popular social media personality who works in sustainable building and design and is an idol of Charlie's; there's a contrived meeting and internship bid for Charlie that feel forced but ultimately end in a pleasant surprise. Charlie and Andre are both likable, with complicated personal lives that are believable without being melodramatic. Charlie is the last to understand things that readers (along with secondary characters) will readily perceive, a familiar tactic that Keating uses effectively to keep pages turning. This novel delivers the satisfying and comforting familiarity readers expect from the genre. Charlie reads as White; Andre is cued as Armenian American. A pleasant journey through a teen romance. (Romance. 13-16)

Gr 9 Up-Opposites attract in this coming-of-age YA contemporary romance set in the Berkshires in the small, predominately white, mountain town of Chester Falls, MA. Charlie Owens is a junior with a passion for historic architecture who has her sights set on leaving her small town and attending Cornell. She drives for Backseat, the town's rideshare app just for high schoolers, and makes good money, though her friends wish she'd balance her social life better with her job. When a minor fender bender with Andre Minasian, an Armenian American senior and popular lacrosse player, threatens her job with Backseat, the two work out a plan for Charlie to carpool Andre to school and everywhere in-between until he can get his car repaired. What follows is a slow-burn romance that challenges Charlie to discover all there is to love about Chester Falls and pushes Andre to consider a future outside of his beloved small town. Keating offers readers a swoon-worthy romance rooted in friendship, set against a dreamy setting ripe for making memories. Secondary plots have Charlie struggling with her parents' relationship status and life choices, and the opportunity of a lifetime to intern with Ava Adams, a social media phenom who works in sustainable building and design. Opportunities surround Charlie, but it is only through understanding herself more completely that she is able to narrow her focus and map out her future. VERDICT Fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han will love riding shotgun on Charlie's journey to discover herself and will fall in love with Andre right along with her.-Samantha Lumetta
