In this propulsive new thriller, a dream summer in Italy turns into a harrowing ordeal for an American exchange student.

Tess Alessandro is living a dream: she was selected for an incredible exchange program in Rome, where she's spending the summer taking in the beautiful sights and sounds and tastes of Italy. Her Italian counterpart, Sofia, is staying with Tess's family while she's away. Sure, her host parents barely speak English, but they seem cool enough.

Until that morning when Tess's hosts make her join their video chat. Sofia is standing over Tess's sleeping parents, and she's brandishing a knife. "Do everything we say, or they will die." Tess is suddenly forced to complete a series of crimes without her passport, cash, credit cards, or privacy. Somehow, she must find a way to uncover their shocking plan and outwit these criminals before she—and her family—end up dead.

Study abroad turns deadly. Seventeen-year-old Tess Alessandro is thrilled to be selected for a foreign exchange program that jets her off to beautiful and exciting Rome. Tess plans on getting to know the language and culture of the city where Nonno, her beloved paternal grandfather, grew up. Her gorgeous Italian counterpart, Sofia Rossi, is equally thrilled to be staying in Washington, D.C. with Tess' family. All seems well until one night when Tess discovers her host parents, Anjelica and Francesco Rossi--who suddenly turn out to be fluent English speakers--on a video chat with their daughter, who is wielding a knife over Tess' sleeping parents. Anjelica and Francesco quickly reveal their intentions: She must do everything they say, committing a series of small crimes, or Tess' parents will be killed. Robbed of her passport, credit cards, money, and phone, Tess is isolated in a foreign country and forced to do their criminal bidding. It's a crackerjack premise that unfortunately never really takes off. The weak characterization leads to some confusion over who's talking to whom at times, and Tess never manages to become a fully engaging protagonist. This novel never elevates the game in a meaningful enough way to get readers energized and/or keep them attentive. A promising concept squandered. (Thriller. 12-17)

Gr 8 Up-Tess Alessandro is embarking on the journey of a lifetime: a high school exchange program in Italy. She is thrilled to spend six weeks in Rome, eating delicious food, soaking up history, art, and culture, and getting to know the land her grandfather left so many years ago. But the morning her program starts, she wakes up to discover that her host family is holding her parents back home in America hostage, with the Italian teen she exchanged places with threatening to kill them if Tess does not follow all of their instructions, starting with stealing from a stranger's home. Bewildered and with no other options, Tess becomes an unwilling accomplice to increasingly dangerous criminal pursuits. As she begins to uncover why her host family is determined to use her, what will she learn about her own family's past? This pulse-pounding thriller will have readers on the edge of their seats until the last page. Teens will love zipping through Rome alongside Tess and her friends as they try to solve the puzzle her ancestors have left before the rest of her feuding family can. Tess is a smart and capable main character, and the novel's ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel or series. VERDICT An excellent choice for any young adult collection, this is also appropriate for mature middle school readers. Fans of mystery/thrillers with puzzles, such as Jennifer Lynn Barnes's The Inheritance Games, will devour this book.-Chelsey Masterson
