A glittering celebration of queer families puts Pride gently in perspective—honoring those in the LBGTQ+ community who fought against injustice and inequality.
This joyful picture-book homage to a day of community and inclusion—and to the joys of anticipation—is also a comprehensive history. With bright, buoyant illustrations and lyrical, age-appropriate rhyme modeled on "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," it tackles difficult content such as the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS marches. On the night before Pride, families everywhere are preparing to partake. As one family packs snacks and makes signs, an older sibling shares the importance of the march with the newest member of the family. Reflecting on the day, the siblings agree that the best thing about Pride is getting to be yourself. Debut author Joanna McClintick and Pura Belpré Award–winning author-illustrator Juana Medina create a new classic that pays homage to the beauty of families of all compositions—and of all-inclusive love.

PreS-Gr 2-It is the night before Pride, and people of all ages are getting ready-putting together their outfits, creating decorations, and making snacks to enjoy throughout the day. Friends and loved ones enjoy one another's company as they look forward to the next day's festivities, and a young child eagerly shares what is to come with the family's newest addition. Some of the challenges and difficulties that members of the LGBTQIA+ community have faced are presented, such as the Stonewall riots of 1969. Themes of resilience, strength, of the diversity of families, and self-worth are spread throughout. Gender-neutral terms, such as amigues and juntes, are used throughout this Spanish translation, with the short, poetic verses echoing the familiar Twas the Night Before Christmas tale. The vibrant, colorful illustrations reflect the beauty of the text, and depict diverse friends and families. VERDICT A beautiful picture book to celebrate diversity, acceptance, and every individual's worth, perfect for Spanish picture book collections for children and displays leading up to and during Pride month.-Selenia Paz
