Grades 2-5 In this lavishly illustrated book about birds, the text tends to take the form of satisfyingly detailed picture captions, allowing the vibrant illustrations and remarkable photographs to take center stage. These graphics spill across thematic double-page spreads, which include some with vertical orientations and create inviting panoramas. The beginning chapter introduces the basics: how birds are related to dinosaurs, how birds fly, various types of nests, eggs, chicks, and diets. Subsequent chapters cover bird families (flightless birds, water birds, parrots), behavior (singing, mating displays, camouflage, migration), habitats (underground, forest, coastal, desert, city), and how birds interact with humans (domestic and working birds, pollinators, environmental and other man-made hazards, along with ways to help: feeding stations, bird baths, window decals to prevent glass strikes). A final spread urges readers to take up birding, and the book ends with a glossary, index, and list of national birds. This compilation packs in lots of information and a plethora of birds and is sure to appeal to young report writers, browsers, and bird enthusiasts alike.
