Then he realizes that the dog does understand commands—he just doesn't understand Spanish! Follow along as José teaches su perro inteligente some new words en español.
This early reader, co-written by notable Broadway producer Susan Rose and children’s book author Silvia López, is the perfect introduction for English-speaking children who have just begun learning Spanish. The inclusion of the Spanish/English translations at the end of the book also makes it an excellent teaching tool. Exciting, easy-to-read books are the stepping stone a young reader needs to bridge the gap between being a beginner and being fluent.

A young Latine boy finally gets to rescue the dog of his dreams, but training can be a challenge in two languages. Like many children, Jos has been dreaming of having a pet of his own, specifically un perro, a dog. Like any good owner, Jos promptly begins training his new canine companion but soon realizes his rescue mutt, Feliz, knows only words in English. This is a problem because in Jos's home everyone speaks both Spanish and English. Jos and Feliz must rise to the challenge; fortunately, treats and snuggles are great motivators. The narrative uses Spanish words and phrases throughout ("perros blancos," "Yo quiero este!" "Sientate!"), usually with English context clues for understanding. This is complex vocabulary for an early reader, and the shifting in phonics from English to Spanish will be challenging for true beginners; the book is best suited for intermediate to advanced readers in dual-language classrooms or homes. Much like Feliz, however, it is sure to find a loving (and bilingual) home. Cheerful illustrations complement the text, helping readers make sense of the narrative. While Jos and his mother are darker-skinned, his father and sister are lighter-skinned. Cuando quieres un perro feliz, look no further. (glossary of Spanish-English words) (Early reader. 6-8)

Gr 2-4-Jos is eager to have his first dog. At the shelter, there are many types of dogs, but one of them, a white dog with brown spots, is the right size for the family and gives Jos what resembles a big smile. Jos calls him "Feliz." The bilingual (English-Spanish) family is delighted with the new family member, but when Jos tries some commands, Feliz does not follow through. Using some ingenuity, Jos finds a solution to this predicament. This charming easy chapter book for primary grade children who can read independently is set in a comfortably sized black-and-white font. The four chapters, mainly in English, are interspersed with Spanish words and phrases that are not highlighted, but integrated into the narrative. However, the literal translations do not always follow clear Spanish syntax. Pastel digital illustrations provide a soothing atmosphere with shades of blue and purple, while using strong yellow pictorial elements as a unifying iconographic factor throughout. Moreover, the art sets the story's mood and helps readers understand the familiar plot. This book is perfect for a read-aloud at home with second grade English speakers who want to learn some Spanish vocabulary words. Back matter includes a list of words and Spanish phrases. VERDICT An easy-to-read book for dog lovers who enjoy independent reading.-Kathia Ibacache

Grades K-3 This bilingual early chapter book follows a boy's experiences adopting a shelter dog and teaching it basic commands. Jos knows that the one thing his family is missing is a pet dog. Every day he asks, "When can we get un perro?" but one morning his dad surprises him by saying, "We go today." The whole family goes to the animal shelter, where they see dogs of all sizes and colors, but it's a white dog with brown patches that catches Jos's eye. As he approaches the pup, it suddenly smiles! Jos has found his dog. Back at home, Jos names his new dog Feliz (Happy) and tries asking it to do some simple tricks (sintate, chate), but to no avail. A funny situation leads to the revelation that Feliz only understands commands in English, so Jos gets to work teaching the Spanish equivalents. Divided into four heavily illustrated chapters, the book offers readers support through nicely aligned artwork and text that features repetition, context clues, and a list of the Spanish words and phrases used in the story.
