Preschool-Grade 2 These new illustrated storybooks in the Really Wild Families series (2 new titles) combine the look and feel of a picture book with standard nonfiction content about animals (their distinctive body parts, habitats, homes, diets, young, etc.). The animals are personified in each book, with an appealing young animal narrator acting as a guide to its species. For instance, in Little Elephant, the pint-sized pachyderm describes having to "hold on to Mommy's tail to help . . . keep up" on a long walk, while "Grandma leads the way." This approach leads to occasional awkward moments but may appeal to picture-book fans who are hesitant about exploring more traditional nonfiction. Though a different illustrator depicts the animals and their surroundings in each book, the artwork consistently captures key details about the animals, which all have a cute, slightly cartoonish look. While the main text of the books situates animal facts in a fictional setting, each title also includes a substantial amount of back matter, including several pages of straight nonfiction about the animal and its conservation, a set of playful crafts and activities, and a quiz.
