When the history and character of her Shakespeare-obsessed hometown is threatened, a powerhouse lawyer goes toe to toe with a commercial developer in a hilarious rom-com from the author of For the Love of the Bard.
Portia Barnes is the youngest managing partner in her law firm’s history, and she and her stilettos are poised to step into the role of her dreams—leading the firm’s new Boston office. But first she’s taking a summer sabbatical in her hometown of Bard’s Rest, New Hampshire, where she discovers something’s rotten in the midst of the town’s annual Shakespeare festival.
Hotshot commercial developer Benjamin Dane is sniffing around Bard’s, and while Portia isn’t necessarily a Shakespeare fanatic like the rest of her family, she’s not about to let him bulldoze the town’s beloved outdoor theater. Yet to Portia’s dismay, Ben proves as skilled as she is when it comes to outworking, outmaneuvering, and one-upping the competition. While she’s never hesitated to wage war against hyper-successful alpha males, Portia is caught off guard by Ben’s openness and lack of arrogance. As her own long-constructed walls start to come down, Portia begins to wonder if he might be more than an archnemesis.
With her heart on the line and the future of the town hanging in the balance, Portia faces an impossible decision—Ben or Bard’s?—unless she finds a way to broker the merger of her life, and ensures the curtain falls on a happy ending for everyone.

The quirky charm of Shakespeare-obsessed Bard’s Rest, N.H., is threatened in Martin’s sparkling standalone sequel to For the Love of the Bard. Portia Barnes is poised to make partner at her prestigious Boston law firm—as soon as she’s back from her summer sabbatical in her offbeat hometown. Returning to Bard’s Rest, she meets dashing real estate developer Benjamin Dane, who’s looking to build luxury condominiums on Will’s Island, home of the town’s cherished annual Shakespeare festival. Despite the instant attraction between these two, Portia agrees to represent the Bard’s Rest Merchant Association as it seeks to block Ben’s plans and protect the island and festival. As they go head-to-head, however, their competitiveness only fans the flames of their connection, leaving Portia torn between her loyalty to Bard’s Rest and a potential future with Ben. Martin’s cast is dynamic and winsome, and the fiery chemistry between Portia and Ben will leave readers wanting more. This is sure to scratch the itch for fans of the enemies-to-lovers trope. Gilli Messer returns to narrate the second installment of the "Bard's Rest Romance" series (following For the Love of the Bard). Unlike the rest of her family--and most of the town--Portia Barnes isn't enamored with all things Shakespeare. Unwillingly taking a three-month sabbatical before starting her new position as a managing partner for her large firm, she spends the summer in her hometown, where she's roped into using her expertise as the annual Shakespeare festival's attorney. Commercial developer Benjamin Dane is visiting Bard's Rest, scoping out possible investment opportunities in the area, including the town's beloved Will's Island. The two cross paths and butt heads throughout the summer, all the while fighting their overwhelming attraction to each other. Messer exquisitely captures Portia's personality, most notably the anxieties and insecurities hiding behind her brusque manner. Emotive intonations and even pacing keep the story flowing. While she gives Portia's mother a French accent appropriate to the character's background, there is frequently little distinction between many of the other characters, most notably between the protagonists, which may distract from the production. VERDICT Listeners who enjoyed the series' previous title will enjoy the continuation. Buy where the first audiobook is popular.--Amanda L. S. Murphy
