Global education consultant Gorton (50 Hikes with Kids: Utah and Nevada) and outdoor enthusiast/sociologist Palmo teamed to write this guide that's part of the larger "50 Hikes with Kids" series. The book features kid-friendly adventures in Texas and is divided into the regions of West Texas/Big Bend Country, the Panhandle Plains, Hill Country, Prairies and Lakes, the Piney Woods, and the Coastal Plains. Charts categorize the recommended hikes by length (all under five miles), degree of difficulty (easy, moderate, and challenging), elevation, featured highlights (waterfalls, history, birds) and "hub" (the nearest main city). The trails themselves are divided by features such as geology, history, lakes, and ponds. The text even advises readers about the ideal season to go to specific destinations. The preparation section gives tips for nature journaling, supplies and safety, and showing respect for nature. The book provides maps, information about fees, estimated times to complete the adventure, directions, ideas for scavenger hunts, and tips on where to find treats nearby, such as ice cream, corn-dog nuggets, pie, and homemade fudge. VERDICT A thoughtfully curated guide to 50 kid-friendly adventures and hikes throughout the Lone Star State.--Whitney Bates-Gomez
