PreS-Gr 1-Big Bub, a friendly-looking purple monster, is on their way to a birthday party. Ready to ride their bike, they are dismayed when the bicycle tires are deflated. Trying to get to the event, poor Big Bub gets stuck in a taxi, a blue truck, and even tries to take a bus. In the end, Big Bub is resourceful as they go to the junkyard to find roller skates and skate their way towards the store for a gift and to the party. A butterfly is a silent, but comedic, companion to the monster; the butterfly's reactions to the situations are a visual clue for young readers. Every sentence starts with "Big Bub," and this repetition, along with bright colors and lists of word families, sight words, and "bonus words," makes this an ideal choice for new readers. VERDICT Purchase this delightful book for early reader collections.-Maria Graybosch
